The Mercedes-Benz range has since the 1950s always featured a stylish four-seater coupe version of its largest range of saloons to appeal to those well-healed buyers who require something a little more sporting than a formal saloon without sacrificing practicality. The 1980 launched SEC coupes fitted this bill perfectly. Reaching the UK in 1981 and derived from the then new W126 S-Class saloons, the smooth styling of the new coupes featured the traditional horizontal radiator grille used on Mercedes sporting models and were available with 3839cc or 4973cc V8 engines. Featuring a myriad of safety features, impressive dynamics and the usual bank-vault Mercedes build quality, the SEC may have been more expensive than its nearest competitors, the Jaguar XJS and BMW 6-Series, but in many respects this extra cost was fully justified. The SEC received a traditionally modest facelift in early 1986 which included the replacement of the 380 SEC by a new 420 SEC model powered by a 4196cc V8 engine. The 500 SEC continued, to be joined in October of that year by a new range topping 5547cc 300 bhp V8 engined 560 SEC model. The ultimate SEC featuring limited slip differential, programmable 4-speed automatic transmission, self-levelling rear suspension, air conditioning and electric everything, the 560 SEC was a formidable performer. Continued substantially unchanged until its replacement in 1992 by a more ungainly successor, the 1981-92 SEC is still one of the ultimate autobahn stormers.
This 1988 registered example is finished in white with a grey leather interior and has covered a warranted 121,274 miles from new as supported by 'a very comprehensive service history including bills'. Said to be 'superbly maintained' the car had one owner from 1993 to 2001 and has had only one other registered keeper since then. Said to have an 'unmarked body' and to be 'without the normal problems (dry boot!)' the vendor describes the engine, electrics, paintwork, bodywork, transmission, interior trim, chassis and wheels/tyres as 'all excellent'. The car will be sold with a current MOT until November 2007.
