1969 MG C GT Sebring Evocation

Estimated at £28,000 - £32,000

Lot details
Registration No: 30 MGC
Chassis No: CCD1-4610C
Mot Expiry: May 2010

Initially modelled on the famous `RMO 699F' - one of just two `Sebring' Works racers - this particular MGC GT has undergone two distinct phases of evolution. The first was when previous owner Malcolm Young commissioned its transformation from a standard road car into a Works-style evocation (1988-90). Enlarged to 3.3 litres and set back by approximately four inches, the triple Weber carburettor-fed straight-six was allied to a five-speed close-ratio gearbox and drove the rear wheels via a limited slip differential. As well as Works-style suspension front and rear including a disc-braked back axle located by radius rods and carried via uprated springs and adjustable shock absorbers in turrets, the MGC gained a special steering rack with two-and-a-half turns lock-to-lock.
While bodily it was fitted with an aluminium roof, bonnet, doors, wings and valances. Road registered as '30 MGC', the much modified GT was advertised for sale in the February 1991 issue of Safety Fast with an asking price of £45,000. Changing hands thereafter, the car was then thoroughly reworked a second time during the mid to late 1990s. Entrusted to MG Motorsport of Bovingdon (Herts.), the engine was overhauled and tuned to produce yet more power (a dyno sheet on file from 1998 records peak outputs of 244.2bhp and 251.4lbft with 189.6bhp at the rear wheels). However, the new keeper's primary focus was on weight loss. Thus, '30 MGC' sports numerous carbon fibre pieces such as its dashboard, sump, rocker cover, differential back plate, internal door panels and seats (the latter weighing just 1.3kg each). While, aluminium is used for the foam-filled fuel tank, catch tank, radiator, tailgate and rollcage. SJ Sportscars of Crediton (Devon) were responsible for the `crash diet' and also installed the imposing vented / cross-drilled AP racing front brakes. Described by the vendor as being in "very good" overall condition, this extraordinary MGC is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 2010 and numerous bills / invoices totalling circa £50,000 (but not covering the initial build).
