Restored in 1990 by Robin James Engineering
Reputedly raced in period
Seen to be running and starting well
In 1907, a Norton with a Peugeot engine won the first Isle of Man TT, beginning a long tradition of sporting excellence. The International was introduced for Norton’s race bikes and road-going TT replicas in 1932. Overseen by Joe Craig, Arthur Carroll had designed an overhead-camshaft engine for the works racers and although it retained the same bore and stroke of the CS1, the International was all new. Gradually developed, the 1950-onward Internationals were available as the 500cc Model 30 and 350cc Model 40, and featured all-alloy engines, close-ratio gears, Roadholder telescopic forks and plunger rear suspension. The International had much success in racing, including in the Isle of Man TT, although in the 1950s it was overshadowed by the new DOHC Norton Manx.
The history of this beautiful 1951 International Model 40 is known back to 1990, when it was restored Robin James Engineering. It was reputedly raced in period by Jim and Erick Pink, although it lacks supporting evidence. Retaining many original parts including a matching cylinder barrel and crankcase, it is said to run and ride very well and start with ease. The current V5C is supplied, along with paperwork from Robin James and some historic V5s.
