The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was built in 1901 by the Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch, which had previously manufactured bicycles, lawnmowers and stationary engines. Under various ownerships, the name has continued to the present day, making it one of the longest-lasting names in the two-wheeled world. A lightweight 225cc (64 by 70mm) two-stroke model was introduced in 1914 but production was soon curtailed by the war. It was revived for the 1920s as the Model 201, with a 2¼hp engine, two-speed gearbox, roller chain drive, drum brakes and adjustable handlebars. The frame’s angled top rail allowed for a low saddle position; also fitted with aluminium footboards and sometimes protective leg shields, Enfield very much had rider comfort in mind.
This c.1922 Model 201 was discovered in a derelict state and has only recently emerged from a full restoration. Now presenting to a very high standard, only the most minor fettling is required to finish the project, in addition to registering it with the DVLA. Once that is completed, it will be a very welcome sight at pre-war rallies such as the popular Banbury Run and Graham Walker Memorial Run, and it is sure to be very well-received upon its rally début.
