Introduced in March 1956 the Dauphine was revolutionary in the world of popular 5CV. The only inclusion from the 4CV were the wheels with five nuts and a few mechanical elements. The small family sector was a bestselling market in France at the time, and the Dauphine was quick to gain a large market share. However the Renault Dauphine’s appeal saw it sell well in countries beyond its French homeland, selling more than two million in the 11-year production run. The engine was still mounted at the rear, a habit of Renault at the time, with a 845cc straight-four engine which allowed a maximum speed of 110km per hour. While the Dauphine was originally an 'economy car' the 875cc four-cylinder engine was later breathed on by Amédée Gordini and produced an impressive 37bhp once tuned.
Built during 1964, this delightful Renault Dauphine was built as an ‘export’ model which was specified with state-of-the-art for the 1960s four-wheel disc brakes, which were previously only seen on the Gordini models. It is understood that the little Renault was first owned by a French country gentleman who soon after purchasing the car moved to Paris and left it with his cousin. It is understood that it was laid up particularly well in a dry barn and kept covered the whole time, whilst the engine was occasionally started to ensure it was mechanically in good fettle.
Found some fifty years after its build date in an incredible state of preservation, the Dauphine was imported to the UK in 2015 by the previous (and only other) UK keeper before being carefully recommissioned and then sold to the vendor. Carefully stored as a static exhibit as part of his impressive private collection, the vendor recently got the car into running condition again, having checked it over mechanically and describes it as being in ‘an excellent state of preservation’. Certainly, to H&H’s eyes this must be one of the most original examples in existence and its current odometer reading of just 9,580km is certainly justified. It is evident that the external paintwork has received attention previously, and the car is today resplendent in its current metallic blue finish which the vendor describes as being in overall ‘good’ condition.
Now offered to the market as the vendor feels that it deserves a new, loving home, ‘OWT 139B’ is offered with a modest file which includes the UK V5C, a French language owners handbook and service locations book, plus a UK market sales brochure for the Dauphine model.
