The Honda CB400F, also marketed as the 400 Four Super Sport, was an inline-four sports motorcycle with a 408cc transverse engine, a six-speed gearbox, a front disc brake and electric starting. Launched at the 1974 Cologne Motorcycle Show, it remained in production until 1978 and was appreciated for its refinement and good looks, even if the rival Kawasaki had the edge in the performance stakes. British-market models were offered in two very attractive colours, Light Ruby Red and Varnish Blue. According to the 1976 Bike road test, the CB400F produced 37bhp at 8,500rpm and was good for 103.8mph.
This highly original four-owner 1976 400 Four has been in single ownership since 2005 and appears in quite outstanding unrestored condition – “near mint,” in the vendor’s words. It has been very carefully maintained in the present ownership, stored in a heated garage and only exercised in fine weather. The exhaust system has been replaced, but with original factory items. Although it cannot be confirmed, the odometer reading of 10,310 miles seems very likely to be genuine. A bespoke luggage rack has been made and fitted in the present ownership, along with new tyres. Last ridden it 2021, it will require some recommissioning and a new battery, and is supplied with the current V5C.
