Lot details

Chassis No: 11102122083553

Motor Car Location: Dunbartonshire

  • Only 51,053 miles from new (atoc)
  • Understood to have had just five owners
  • Rare and desirable UK-supplied, right-hand drive example
  • Thought to have been supplied new by Gay and Lougher Motors Ltd, Cardiff and first registered ‘CY 27’
  • Offered with a large history file including original stamped service book
  • The rarest W111 variant, produced for only two years (’65-’67)

Introduced in mid-1959, the Mercedes-Benz W111 series was a natural progression from the 220 Pontoon. The new models were bigger inside and out and sported a greater abundance of brightwork; not to mention the finned rear wings which spawned the model's 'fintail' nickname. In addition to the four-door Saloon, the range comprised an elegant two-door Cabriolet and Coupe. The cars were very well-appointed inside, being adorned with Mercedes textured leather and wood trimmings. The fully-independent suspension comprised wishbones and coil springs at the front and low-pivot swing-axles with radius arms and coil springs at the rear, the ride from which was very statesmanlike.

From the mid-1960s the Mercedes-Benz range expanded by the now familiar and well-tried process of mixing engines and bodyshells. The 230 and 230S saloons of 1965-1968 employed a 2281cc engine in the 220 bodyshell; while two new motors, the 2496cc 240 and 2778cc 280, powered a new, larger and lower body, resulting in the 250S, 250SE and 250SEC as well as similar models in the 280 range. All these cars were available in 4-door saloon, 2-door coupe or convertible form.

This example was manufactured in 1966 and is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive example, having been first UK registered in August that year. It is understood that the Mercedes-Benz was sold new by Gay and Lougher Motors Ltd of Cardiff and was initially provided the registration number ‘CY 27’. Fitted with the 2496cc six-cylinder engine mated to the automatic gearbox and finished in the colour combination of silver with blue leather interior upholstery, the Mercedes retains its rare factory sunroof, period radio and walnut dashboard.

Entering current ownership in 2009, the 250 SE is understood to have had only five total keepers. Having covered only 51,053 miles from new, the Mercedes-Benz is offered with a large history file including the original stamped service book showing fifteen stamps (please see full breakdown below) and one handwritten entry; the initial guarantee from Mercedes; numerous service reports and documents; original pre-inspection sheets with the mileage at 24 and 29 miles; original sales booklet; many MOT’s dating from 1989 to 2016 and a large collection of invoices.

The Mercedes-Benz has received new carpets and refurbished wheels in approximately 2016. At some stage in its life, the badging has been changed to incorrect 280 SE badges.
