Horex was a German motorcycle manufacturer, founded in 1923 by Fritz Kleemann in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in Hesse, the brand name originating from the first letters of Homburg, supplemented by the Rex trademark of his parents canning glass company. World War II interrupted motorcycle production but they resumed in 1948 with a 350cc single-cylinder model, the SB 35 Regina, and in 1951 Horex added a 500cc OHC parallel-twin. In 1954 a 400 cc version of the Regina was launched, but by 1956 total production was only 2790 motorcycles and the company decided to suspend production and concentrate on manufacturing car parts for Daimer-Benz, eventually being taken over by them in 1960. Horex motorcycles were rarely exported and only a few are thought to survive outside Germany.
This c1955 Regina 400, part of a deceased estate and being offered at no reserve, is typical of German bikes from the era exuding quality and solid engineering. According to its original green RF60 log book it came into the UK in 1964 and has only had 4 owners since, the last one buying the bike in 1977. Used by its enthusiast owner as part of a collection of European bikes, it has been stood for a number of years but the engine turns over on the kickstart and it seems to be complete and original. The bike comes supplied with an owners manual, copy spares list, some old MOTs, the original RF60 green log book and a V5.
