The AJS Model 18 was introduced in 1945 and, when it was retired in 1966, had become one of the last survivors of the golden age of big British singles. An updated version of a 1930s design, it became the Model 18S in 1949 when springer rear suspension was introduced. With a 500cc engine and four-speed gearbox, the 18 was gradually updated and in 1951 gained an alloy cylinder head. Other changes included an increase in the compression ratio from 5.9 to 8.7:1 in 1956, the adoption of Girling shock absorbers around the same time, and the change from a Burman gearbox to one of AMC’s own manufacture in 1957.
This lovely 1959 Model 18S appears in very good cosmetic order, with original Dunlop rims, Lucas switchgear, levers and so on. Mechanically, it is said to be very smooth, reliable and willing to start, and the electrics benefit from a 12-volt Zener diode conversion. Originally registered ‘TAM 163’, the number ‘NSK 322’ was issued in 1991. An extensive overhaul was performed in the late 1990s, as evidenced by a large collection of invoices. A comprehensive top-end overhaul was completed recently and is likewise well-documented. Only just run-in, it has been sympathetically maintained with regular greasing and oil changes, and is supplied with a large history file including the current V5C, MOT certificates and tax discs dating back to the 1980s, service and maintenance manuals and a certificate of authenticity from the AJS Matchless Owners’ Club. A full toolkit is also supplied.
