Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 to replace the Porsche 924 as their entry-level model, although the 924 continued until 1988 as an even lower-priced alternative. Many Porsche enthusiasts considered the 944 to be the first real front-engined Porsche, because it didn’t have the Audi sourced 2.0 litre engine from the 924. Instead, the 944 started life with a 2.5 litre straight-4 engine which was based on one-half of the Porsche 928's V8 engine. Based on the earlier 924 body, some noticeable changes included flared wings, flared quarter panel and a larger rear spoiler.

After a favourable reception was given to the incoming prototype 'Sport Equipment' version of the Type 944 S2, Steve Kevlin, a Porsche UK employee and championship driver was interested in developing an SE 944 available to the public. It was not surprising that a short time later an internal Porsche memorandum dated 7th February 1992 (production of the 944 ended in 1991) was released which stated: 'After being driven by a number of the management team, verbal approval was given for the purchase of the parts to construct 15 vehicles.' - although it is believed only 14 were ever completed.

The SE's improved specification included Koni adjustable dampers, limited slip differential along with cooler, shorter and stiffer front suspension springs, additional coil springs at the rear, an adjustable rear stabiliser bar and a stiffer front stabiliser bar. Engine power output increased to 225bhp (with improved torque from 4,250rpm) with help from a re-mapped ECU. A plethora of cosmetic upgrades were also made, with the fitment of a Club sport steering wheel, a colour-coded bridge spoiler, SE rear badges and SE side stripes.

Due to their rarity, the S2 SE was widely believed to be somewhat of a myth within Porsche circles. However, Porsche Club GB still retains records of the cars, which today show that two of the cars were written off in accidents and only six, including the one offered here, are known to survive.

First registered as ‘K240 LNS’ on the 1^st August 1992, chassis WP0ZZZ94ZMN400549 was one of the last of the fourteen S2 SE’s delivered. Little is known of the early history of the car, however its recorded MOT history shows that the car clocked up some 168,000 miles through nine keepers prior to the vendor by which time it had become rather tired.

Recognised as being something quite special, the Porsche was eventually rescued and subjected to a painstaking restoration by renowned specialist Rennsport, which is documented on two memory sticks and shows the car receiving a bare-block engine overhaul as well as a complete cosmetic refresh into the original Alpine White paint scheme with correct ‘SE’ decals, and refurbishment of the correct type D90 alloy wheels. Amazingly, the interior was also subjected to the same attention to detail (despite the rarity of the parts available) which meant that the original Porsche script cloth seating and door cards were retained whilst the original switches were individually restored with new, correct graphics applied to each. The car is now described by the vendor as being ’excellent’ and inspection by the consigning specialist left them impressed.

Now offered for sale after some six years of ownership by the vendor, he feels that covering just over 5,300 miles since the odometer was reset at the time of restoration is not enough for the car and that a new, deserving owner will get far more enjoyment from it. Said to be ‘ready for its next adventure anywhere’, this fine example is offered complete with history file dating back to the restoration, complete with numerous invoices for parts, the memory sticks documenting the restoration, UK V5C and several MOT test certificates.
