Henry Herbert Collier was one of the first British motorcycle designers and founded the Matchless Motorcycle Company in 1899. Its two wheelers were a success and the brand survived until 1966. Shorter lived was the firm's flirtation with motorcar manufacture, that lasted from 1923 to 1925 and resulted in the K Series Light Tourer. Powered by a front mounted flat-twin engine of 1249cc driving the rear wheels via a three-speed gearbox, it featured quarter elliptic springs all round and four-wheel braking. The car was initially sold at £225 and, though very much better engineered than the incoming Austin Seven, proved uncompetitive at twice its price.

This well presented K Series is reputed to be the only remaining Matchless car, and was reportedly restored to a very high standard some years ago, following which it resided in a museum until purchased in its current condition by the vendor's father during 2006. Though run briefly following the acquisition, it has since lain dormant once more, so will require a degree of recommissioning before taking to the road again. This fascinating car comes complete with an impressive history folder that includes several magazine articles, letters from owner to owner etc. 'XR 5823' also features wet weather gear and a passenger windshield. A unique and interesting proposition.
