Lot details Registration No: DNO 1B Chassis No: 03110 Mot Expiry: July 2003
The Pininfarina-styled and mid-engined Dino, named after Enzo Ferrari's late son Alfredino who died in 1956 aged 24, initially had aluminium bodywork and was powered by a 2-litre, 4-cam V6 with 5-speed transaxle. The Scaglietti-constructed body beautiful clothed a tubular chassis with wishbone independent suspension at each corner. Later in 1969, though, a longer wheelbase version with steel panels and 2.4-litre engine with cast-iron rather than alloy block, the Dino 246GT, replaced the original Dino 206.
The larger, more production-friendly motor was at least more powerful than the original, producing 195bhp at 7000rpm, which was helpful as the new Dino was heavier. Where the new 246GT really scored was in ride and, in particular, handling, the car being super nimble through the twisty bits. Only 4000 Dinos were built before the 308 with V8 engine replaced the model in 1973.
According to the Hertfordshire vendor, the 1972-built Dino with the curvaceous Pininfarina penned coachwork was discovered in a Scottish castle in the early 1980s. For the past twenty years, the right-hand drive coupe has been maintained by a leading marque specialist and the 2.4-litre 6-cylinder engine rebuilt with high performance specification. The overall condition of this fixed head, which is painted in traditional Italian racing red with black interior, and has a 5-speed manual gearbox of course, is said to be superb, whilst the 47,000 miles indicated when entered for this sale are likely to be the genuine total mileage since new.
PLEASE NOTE: This excellent car has been owned and looked after by a major pre-war Alfa restorer for the last twenty years. He bought it 20 years ago but sold it some five years ago to a very good friend of his who resides in Dubai. It is kept in magnificent conditions and wants for nothing and is driven regularly by its keeper and for two weeks in the summer by its owner. The engine has been blueprinted, some 5000 miles ago, and is lovely and had new cams and carburettors etc etc all supplied by Superformance.
It is not shown with bumpers because that is the look the owner prefers, a bit racier, but they are with the car and included in the sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
