Few motorcycle manufacturers ever had as strong an association with the Isle of Man as Norton did. A Peugeot-engined Norton was the winner of the first ever Isle of Man TT in 1907, and through the 1930s the International model had great success on the fast-paced course. Then, after the war, the legendary Manx model appeared. Arriving just after the war, it was developed from the SOHC International, but utilised an even more potent DOHC 500cc design. Long-stroke engines (79.6 by 100mm) were used until 1953, when the short-stroke (85.6 by 86mm) took over for an improved rev range, and in 1950 the model received Norton’s Featherbed frame, with its famously low centre of gravity. Producing around 50bhp and typically good for 130-140mph, the Manxes were formidable competitors in international racing and remained in production until 1962.
The machine offered for sale was assembled from assorted parts to Manx specification by a previous owner, using an early long-stroke engine. It has not raced to our knowledge but has instead been used for parades, as well as for static display in the builder’s shop. The vendor has also kept it for display purposes, but has started it from time to time and advises that it still runs well. Described as “good” in all areas, some light recommissioning may be required.
