After WWII, Innocenti needed to find a new product in order for their business to survive. The Italian population required cheap transportation for their people to rebuild Italy. Inspired by the Cushman scooters that the US army imported into Italy, Innocenti realised they could apply many of the parts that the factory was already producing to motor scooter production. Innocenti started production of Lambretta scooters in 1947. Spain’s situation was very similar to Italy and in 1954 Lambretta Locomociones S.A. was born in the small Basque town of Eibar following negotiations with Innocenti.

The first models produced in Spain were the 125A and 125B and were manufactured in Spain, except for the first few which used some imported parts from Italy and France. The A models were built on the same design as the Italian LD with a tubular frame and elegant panels covering the framed engine compartment. The B models were open frame. Although enthusiastically received, the volume of Lambrettas produced in Spain was extremely small compared to the Italian or even French variants of Lambretta and they are very rare by comparison. The engine numbers were allocated and shared with both the A and B models as they were produced.

This example is a very early example of the 125A and is well within the first 2000 models produced. Adorned with exceptional and valuable accessories, including an early and very rare speedometer, ‘Locomociones’ branded footboard extensions and spare wheel disc. There is also an intriguing dealer ID plate located under the spare wheel. This example also has some interesting differences: There are no switches on the handlebars and the lights appear to be controlled by floor switches. There is also a switch at the base of the frame loop which may be an engine cut-off switch. There is a large battery holder inside the rear of the engine compartment and the original tools are still present. This is an elegant and interesting scooter that would make for a most intriguing project for a purchaser looking for something different from the norm.
