Last of the MG T-series line, the TF was introduced in October 1953. Although mechanically near identical to its TD predecessor, the provision of a raked radiator, revised wing line and faired-in headlamps lent it an altogether sleeker and sportier air. Powered by a revised version of the well-proven, four-cylinder XPAG engine but this time using larger valves, a higher compression ratio and twin SU 1.5in carburettors, the new model was reputedly capable of over 80mph. Equipped with both rack-and-pinion steering and independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, it helped maintain the marque's 'Safety Fast' reputation. Around 6,200 TF1250s were made, followed by 3,400 1500s.
According to its accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, chassis TF/5983 was completed on June 10th 1954 to right-hand drive, ‘home market’ specification. Supplied new in East Suffolk (or so its ‘PRT 339’ number plate would imply), the MG had been taken off the road by the late 1970s when the DVLA computerised its records. Acquired by C. Bravery Esq of Kent in 1996, the TF had its chassis galvanised, body tub renewed, engine overhauled, gearbox / rear axle checked, wiring loom replaced and instruments professionally refurbished before passing to M. Baxter Esq of Bedfordshire fourteen years later. Entrusted to restorer Brian Ritchie in 2011, the two-seater had its front wings reprofiled and bodywork tided before being repainted in its original Black hue. The interior was re-trimmed in Red leather with matching carpets and weather gear (hood, tonneau, sidescreens). Converted from steel to wire wheels and re-registered with the DVLA on June 10th 2014 (sixty years after it rolled off the Abingdon production line), the MG has been further improved during the current ownership. The engine’s appearance, performance and sound have been enhanced with a chrome ‘MG nut’ rocker cover, tubular extractor performance manifold and stainless steel exhaust system respectively. New 15 x 4.5 wire wheels shod with Pirelli Cinturato have been installed and the paintwork both machine polished and ceramic coated. Ladywood Garage of Chesterfield overhauled the brakes, tuned the carburettors and replaced the nearside front wheel bearing etc at a cost of some £1,596.96 in February 2026. Worthy of close inspection, this decidedly smart, ‘home market’ TF is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, history file (including restoration photos) and MOT certificate valid until August 2026.
