Lot details
Registration No: NKR 582

cc: 500
MOT Expiry Date: Sept 2010

Introduced in 1949 and only available in Series C form, the Vincent Comet was to the single cylinder motorcycle range, what the Black Shadow and Rapide were to the twins. Conceived as a high speed sporting single, they were built to represent the ultimate stage in the development of the production 500cc motorcycle. Vincent was renowned for their exacting standards and offered many of the same features and refinements from their twin cylinder models on their more affordable single cylinder range.

The new models power unit was clearly derived from the twin cylinder models with the rear cylinder being replaced by a frame tie that also supported the four speed Burman gearbox. In most other respects the Comet followed the twin cylinder models, although the brake drums were plain and the Girdraulic spring boxes had only the outer springs. When tested in 1949, the series C Comet was praised for its excellent handling, braking and performance that resulted in it stopping in 21 feet from 30mph, a record at the time, and recording a highly reputable top speed of 88mph. The combination proved successful and the Comet was seen as a more refined machine than its rivals from manufacturers such as BSA and Velocette, placing it at the forefront of its class.

This example of the "touring" Comet, equipped with the valanced mudguards in place of the more common polished blades, has been the subject of a total "ground up" restoration. The vendor informs us that many new parts were employed in the restoration including fork spindles, bushes and eccentrics, Maughan valves and guides, rocker bearings, wiring loom oil and fuel pipes, seat and exhaust system. The wheels were rebuilt with new rims, stainless spokes and fitted with new tyres. The brakes have been relined and stainless fastenings have been employed. Beautifully presented, the machine is "taxed and tested" to September 2010 and accompanied by a Swansea V5C.

PLEASE NOTE: The estimate on this motorcycle is £20,000 - 24,000 and not as printed in the catalogue.
