Introduced in May 1949, the 170S model was the first Mercedes to carry the 'S' designation meaning 'Sonder' or Special model, and was aimed at the increasing number of more affluent post-War buyers who desired greater levels of comfort than could be found in the standard models on offer. A development of the pre-War 230 model, it was initially powered by a 1.8-litre version of the in-line four cylinder M136 engine seen in 1.7-litre guise in the 170V. The enlarged unit now produced some 52 hp (38kW) driving through a four-speed all synchromesh gearbox also seen in the 170V. Top speed was now in the region of 76mph. Unlike the 170V, the front wheels were attached using coil springs, double wishbones and a stabilizer bar in place of the former's lateral leaf spring arrangement.

Despite suffering heavy damage from Allied bombing during WW2, after the end of hostilities the Mercedes factory was fortunate not to be under Soviet control as happened to many of its pre-War competitors, and was thus able to resume the business of building cars as early as May 1946. Following recommencement of production, initially only saloon coachwork was available on its products. However, with the introduction of the 170S they began to offer a wider range of body styles including a two-seat Cabriolet A and four-seat Cabriolet B as offered here, satisfying a need from a growing number of buyers whose economic lot was improving and who, once again, wished to buy more luxurious cars. Remaining in production until its replacement by the 170 Sb in 1952, some 31,000 units of the 170 S were built in both saloon and cabriolet form with most, unsurprisingly in the mainly austere economic environment following the War, being saloons.

Finished most attractively in cream / black with cream interior, black hood and black carpets, we are informed this fine example has been treated to an extensive restoration for which photographic images of the works undertaken are on file. The vendor currently rates the bodywork, paintwork, engine, transmission, electrics and interior as "very good", whilst the car registers some 58,000 km on its odometer. This stylish Mercedes cabriolet, with seating for four, comes with a Swansea V5C document.
