A derivative of the Rover 75 which BMW money and engineering expertise had helped hone, the MG ZT debuted in 2001. Utilising the same, notably rigid, front-wheel drive monocoque platform as its stablemate, the newcomer differed not just in its Peter Stevens styling (he of McLaren F1 and Lotus X180 Esprit fame) but also in its suspension set-up. Determined to make the ZT (and its ZT-T estate car sibling) far sportier to drive, Rob Oldaker and his team specified aluminium rather than rubber for the subframe mounts, stiffened the springs by seventy percent, uprated the shock absorbers and recalibrated the anti-roll bars. Dechromed and riding on 18in alloy wheels shod with Z-rated tyres, the MG duo handled as well as their more menacing aesthetic suggested. Progressively developed, the ZT and ZT-T could be had with a choice of petrol or diesel engines and manual or automatic transmissions. Facelifted in 2004, UK production ground to a halt the following year due to the collapse of the MG Rover Group.
H&H are indebted to the vendor for the following description:
"Finished in X-Power Grey, this extremely tidy and well maintained MG ZT-T 190+ was pre-registered on 1st January 2005 by MG-Rover dealers Edmondsons of Ipswich before being sold to its first owner, Anthony Proctor of Frinton-on-Sea, on 29th January. As well as being a ‘+’ model which featured climate control and electric rear windows, this car was also has the optional ‘Plus’ pack which brought cruise control, Xenon headlamps (including self-levelling and pressure washers), heated screen washers, trip computer, auto-dimming rear view mirror, rain-sensing wipers and rear parking sensors.
The car was acquired by its second owner, Gavin Perry, in July 2008 via Atlas Autos of Manningtree when its mileage was around 17,000. Mr. Perry made the long journey to Suffolk from Oldham to obtain a car in the condition he demanded. As a former British Aerospace missile technician he was meticulous in his upkeep of the MG, performing basic servicing himself whilst employing specialists such as Lates600 in Rugby and Horners in Manchester to undertake more technical jobs such as cambelt and coolant changes. The car was garaged throughout Mr. Perry’s ownership which helped maintain it in excellent condition.
The current owner purchased the car in February 2018 following a search for an outstanding example. At the time the mileage stood at around 63,000. In April 2018 the car underwent its second cambelt change, carried out by JMA Cars in Colwyn Bay. During the current ownership, as well as regular servicing other works carried include; thorough rust-proofing using Dynax products, new thermostat and pipework, new master cylinder, new bonnet struts, replacements VIS motors (precautionary), new brake discs and pads and a set of Continental tyres. To cure the common problem of the under-seat connectors triggering airbag warning lights, both sides have been hardwired. The rear parking sensors are currently disconnected (suspect control unit) and there is some pixelation on the trip computer display.
Being reluctantly sold due to dwindling use (less than 250 miles this year), the ZT-T is complete with original brochure and dealer plates, complete book pack including fully stamped service book and comprehensive history file including invoices and all old MoT’s. The current MoT, carried out in August, noted a perished rubber boot on the offside anti-rollbar droplink – both droplinks have now been replaced. The spare wheel compartment holds a full size spare as well as the complete tool tray. The car also comes with a small collection of useful spare parts plus the double DIN audio / TV setup that was fitted by Mr. Perry, as well as an official MG-Rover dog guard and set of Thule roof rack bars".
PLEASE NOTE: A bracket locating the nearside rear tailgate strut popped off as the vendor opened the tailgate at the venue to unload his belongings. Coincidentally, a spare tailgate strut is included with the car and will need fitting together with a new bracket in order for the tailgate to stay open on its own.
