Nicknamed the `Pagoda' as a result of its distinctive concave hardtop, the 230SL was unveiled to much acclaim at the 1963 Geneva Salon. Between them, Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi had designed a sports car of timeless beauty that was the first to feature a rigid passenger cell sandwiched between deformable crumple zones for added safety. The basis was a shortened W111 platform. Suspension was independent all round by wishbones and coil springs at the front and swing axles at the rear. Braking comprised disc units at the front and drums at the rear, and power was provided by an in-line six-cylinder engine of 2308cc that was fed by multi-point fuel injection and produced 150bhp. The unit drove to the rear wheels via either a four speed-manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The short, wide chassis, excellent suspension and powerful brakes resulted in one of the best handling cars of the period.
This right-hand drive 230SL hails from 1965 and features Silver bodywork complemented by Red leather upholstery. It is equipped with automatic transmission and is felt by the vendor to have "good" bodywork, paintwork and interior trim. The odometer registers an unwarranted 73,000 miles and the current MOT is valid until September 2013. A model for which there is increasing demand.
