For many the definitive Jaguar sports saloon, the MKII was introduced in October 1959. A peerless blend of elegance and muscularity, its super sleek shape clothed an evolution of the Coventry marque's first monocoque design. Powered by derivatives of the same XK DOHC straight-six engine that had swept Jaguar to five Le Mans victories, the MKII was quick to dominate contemporary saloon car racing. Equipped with coil-and-wishbone independent front suspension, a leaf-sprung Salisbury rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, the range-topping 3.8 boasted nearly seven times the horsepower of a Mini 850cc and a 126mph top speed! Blessed with one of the all time great automotive interiors, its stylish instrumentation, rich wood veneers and sumptuous leather upholstery all conspired to cosset and cocoon occupants.
Finished in gunmetal grey metallic with red leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis), "original / good" (interior trim), "very good" (3781cc engine) or "excellent" (bodywork, paintwork) condition. A "four owner Cornish registered car", '211 HCV' is believed but not warranted to have covered just 87,000 miles from new (a figure "supported by a substantial number of old MOT certificates"). Although, it is said to have had only "dry day 'fun run' usage over the last twenty-five years", we understand that the Jaguar has benefited from "a full bodywork restoration (including a bare metal repaint) and minor mechanical attention costing some £5,500" since entering the current custodianship fifteen months ago. Reportedly driven "some 1,500 pleasurable miles this summer" during which time it was found "to run comfortably and cruise effortlessly at 100mph plus recording 60psi oil pressure at 3,000rpm and 30-40psi on 'hot' tickover", the last six months have seen the car further benefit from a replacement exhaust system and new chrome wire wheels shod with fresh tyres. Pleasingly retaining its original red leather upholstery and factory-fitted recessed sun visors, the nicely patinated interior also plays host to rear seatbelts and a modern radio.
