Lot details Registration No: BGC517G Chassis No: CF19 Mot Expiry: April 2004
Following the fruitful collaboration with Carroll Shelby, which had resulted in the hugely successful Shelby AC Cobras, AC Cars of Thames Ditton went back into the tourer or, to be more accurate, 'Grand Tourer' business. The 1966-launched AC 428 was a very high speed tourer indeed, available either as a fixed head or drophead coupe. The 428 was built on a lengthened Cobra chassis with 7106cc Ford V8 and Frua of Italy designed and built bodies.
With breathtaking acceleration and 142mph top speed capability, the 428 offered the seriously trendy with a more exclusive alternative to the Aston Martin DB6 or Chrysler V8-engined Jensen Interceptor. However, body supply from Frua proved to be sporadic due to Italian labour relations, Ford US engines did not arrive when expected and large engined motor cars became unfashionable due to the 1973/4 crisis. By the time 428 production was axed in Surrey, just 51 convertibles and 29 fixed heads had been produced.
On offer here is a 1969-built, one-family owned 428 for thirty-one years from 1970 to 2001 with the automatic transmission. The Hampshire vendor tells us that the 37,500 mile convertible has a huge history file. In the last two years, it has been the subject of a bare metal respray, with wheels and tyres renewed and has just been fitted with alloy 'unleaded' cylinder heads. Both body and blue paintwork are said to be excellent and black interior both original and in good condition.
PLEASE NOTE: The date of expiry of the current MOT is now given above.
