The Rudge Ulster was made famous by Graham Walkers victory in the 1928 Ulster Grand Prix thus giving the bike its name. It was one of the first times a road race had been won at an average speed of more than 80mph, setting a lap record of over 82mph. In the same year Ernie Nott set a new two-hour world record at over 100 mph and went on to set further records in 1929. The bike became the mainstay of road racing in the day, even Enzo Ferarri running a race team in Italy using Rudges. It was supplied ready to race to privateers and was comparatively inexpensive so the Ulster went on to win many honours in the IOMTT and other international events. Unfortunately, works supported racing and the supply of race machinery ended around the mid-thirties with the death of Rudge- Whitworth principal and driving force J.V. PUGH and subsequent diversification into autocycles and other badly managed ventures caused the demise of the Rudge concern in 1940.

The vendor has known of this Rudge Ulster TT replica since the late 1970s when he came across it in a collection of bikes near where he lived in Surrey belonging to a Mr. Little, who in his younger days had competed in sprints on them. When Mr Little passed away about 5 years later the vendor and his father purchased the disassembled bikes and various spare parts. Racing Rudges with the VMCC in the late eighties they built this particular bike for a fellow club member using a 1934 chassis and a 1930 engine fitted with a N.O.S. barrel and piston, buying it back sometime later in a deal for another bike. The bike comes with a quantity of parts order sheets for spares from the Rudge Owners Club with various bits of technical advice on the back and a copy of a 1930 parts list. It is registered on a V5C so can be run on the road for some exhilarating ride outs. The bike has been stood for a few years so will need some recommissioning.
