To scooter collectors, ‘Jimmy’s’ Lambretta LI needs no introduction. That scooter was possibly the most famous Mod scooter of all time, with its distinctive working-class ‘60s Mod appeal in The Who’s rock film opera Quadrophenia. The tragic moment when it collided with post office van in the movie was the ultimate in cinema teen disillusionment. And what was said by Jimmy (Phil Daniels) to the postman, one of the most hilarious one-liners of its generation. From destroying a garden at a house party to carrying a young Leslie Ash who played ‘Steph’ as pillion, ‘Jimmy’s’ Lambretta will live on in the memory of many.

This replica of that iconic scooter was created by Rob Sloane and careful attention has gone into it. The colours have been well matched to the original and the deliberate slightly worn patina of a home customisation has been achieved. The graphics were sourced to be as close as possible to the original stickers as used on the original. The period early ‘80s accessories were largely supplied by Allstyles who supplied them for the actual scooter in the film. These include: the correct crash bars front and rear, FIAMM airhorns, ironing board back rest, Ken Cobbing style exhaust, correct colour handgrips and candy stripe, Cavalli side panel embellishers, Vigano fork boots, Cuppini rear rack, Diamante style floor mat and of course a big Cibie Oscar spotlight amongst the mirrors on the front. The homemade customisations have replicated what ‘60s ‘Jimmy’ did’ including chrome tape on the front mudguard and white paint stripe on the tyres.

The numbers match for an Li125. The scooter, we are told, now has a 175 top end and we can see from the supplied bills that considerable expense was made on this at the time it was created around 2006 and a further £1000 recently. We were able to see the scooter running very well at the time of consignment. Still registered as a 125 the scooter is potentially ‘learner legal’. With one of the original ‘Jimmy’ machines from the film (there were several) fetching £36,000 back in 2008, this is an opportunity to cruise Brighton for a fraction of that.
