  • Ex-Weston Lambretta Museum scooter
  • High quality racer with a myriad of unique parts
  • One of the limited edition series of ‘Red Devil’ hand-built racers
  • Very rare part of British scootering history
  • Good working condition
  • V5C for UK roads

Lambrettas have been raced since the very early days of production. Innocenti themselves had experimented with racing versions since 1948 with the Model A and then the model B which it is said could achieve 70mph but it was only with the arrival of the model B that speed racing became viable with several factory versions, dealer versions and private individual built machines appearing. In 1949 Innocenti built a record breaker based on the model C which was developed to produce 13 HP at 8800 RPM in ‘supercharged’ form more than triple the original scooter’s output. This machine achieved a new 24 hour record in Montlhery, France covering 2467 Kilometres at an average speed of 102.8 kmh. A limited production of these racers were released into the market and always in colour Red. By 1952 there were numerous endurance races all across Italy including the ‘Giro de Lombardi e Piemonte’ the ‘Giro D’Italia’ and regular track racing at Monza and Imola. This inspired a whole scene of Lambretta racers and a supply industry of tuning services and the parts required for the machines.

In Great Britain this tradition was emulated by now the now retired Lambretta guru Howard Chambers of Southampton who ran one of the UK’s largest Lambretta parts supply businesses for decades. Famous for his knowledge and supply of spare parts Howard was responsible for dozens or some say possibly hundreds of restorations over the years. Over the years and specialising in the older open frame models, Howard built a series of unique racing style scooters. Each one unique, numbered and different from the others.

We present here Red Devil No. 14. And in the style of the Milan-Taranto racing scooters of the 1950s. We believe she was gifted to the Weston Lambretta museum in 2017 and has only done 3km since the build. Based on a Model D and engine is a LD125 case.

We have been able to speak to Howard Chambers who has verified this scooter:

Friction suspension stiffeners

Veglia Speedometer working but with only 3km

Original Biemme rear light accessory

Quality racing seat

12V electronic conversion

Original Dellorto carburettor with trumpet air intake

10 inch wheel conversions

Extended centre stand

Front mudguard number plate crest

This is a very attractive racing style Lambretta from a well-known but limited edition series. We were able to see the scooter running recently and it sounded very good. We would recommend a full service before regular use as she has been resting unused for some time and is showing the odd small oil leak. She comes with a dating certificate from the Vintage Motor Scooter Club and would certainly grace any Lambretta collection.
