The 150cc 'VBA' range of Vespas were the immediate successors to the long-running ‘wideframe’ scooters of the 1950s. Replacing the elegant 'VB1T' (known as the Clubman in the UK), the VBA had a completely redesigned body and engine which formed the basis for decades of future Vespas. The engine was for the first time a rotary inducted design which improved reliability, whilst both increasing power and reducing fuel consumption. The new design also required less oil in the fuel mix. A new carburettor was designed and relocated to a position in an air box affixed to the top of the engine. The whole package was a much more professional-looking machine, yet retainted many similar features of the desirable lines of its larger GS sister. The design was continually improved and in 1960 the 'VBB' replaced the VBA which was visually the same but now featured a four-speed gearbox in place of the earlier three-speed. Sold until 1967, the VBA/VBB continues to be one of the most popular Vespa models.
A charming example of the later second series 150cc Vespa 'VBB', chassis number 151462 was acquired by the vendor from its home market in the hope that he would restore it for his personal collection. Notably original, it still retains its correct clamshell 100km/h speedometer, Siem front and rear light units plus its GPM Milano horn. Sold as a project and temptingly offered without reserve, this iconic Vespa will make a rewarding project for any prospective purchaser.
