Clockmaker Torakusu Yamaha founded Nippon Gakki, which, in 1955, established the Yamaha Company to build motorbikes, the first YA1 machine being a 125cc 2-stroke single-cylinder called the Red Dragonfly largely based on a German DKW. The marque quickly gaining a reputation for offering commuting and leisure consumers rapid lightweights, the distinctive tuning fork logo on their fuel tanks. On track, Britain's Phil Read won the 1964 250cc world title for Yamaha.
The vendor of the 1971 Mini Enduro offered here, a relatively rare model in this country and one the first mini bikes to come to market, tells us that he acquired it from a farm sale about ten years ago.
This 50cc powered miniature is in very original condition and comes with period 1970s stickers. It is reputed to have been one of the late Barry Sheene's pit bikes, a Yamaha Road Race Team sticker on the seat. The single-cylinder motor starts and runs wells, says the owner, and the diminutive motorbike should provide the next owner with fun paddock transport.
