MG is arguably the most famous of all sports car marques. The MGA stemmed from an aerodynamically efficient sports car first seen competing in the 1951 Le Mans 24 Hours. Such was the new production MGA 1500's impact in the MG dealer showrooms in 1955 that over 13,000 were produced in the first year of production. A closed fixed head coupe joined the open roadster in the MG catalogue from 1956 onwards. The pushrod 1598cc version followed and, finally, the 1622cc engined MkII. By the time, the last A came off the Abingdon line in mid-1962, 101,081 had been manufactured.
The 1600 MkI roadster offered here was built at Abingdon in September 1960 and shipped back from the dry climate of Texas in 1999. Lincoln restorers C&H Classics fully rebuilt the car in the spring of 2000, retaining many of the original parts, where possible, including panels, instruments and radiator grille.
We understand that the body was removed and chassis totally stripped down and repainted with four coats of chassis black. The back axle was checked, stripped and repainted, and differential fitted with new seals. Both 1.6-litre engine and 4-speed gearbox were completely rebuilt, and wiring loom, carpets, hood and sidescreens were all renewed. Leather trim, walnut dash and chromed wires were fitted. The Lincolnshire vendor tells us that the car has only been driven 300 miles since restoration and the overall condition is A1.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
