The iconic Cobra was born when Texan Le Mans winner Carroll Shelby shoe-horned Ford's new lightweight 260ci V8 into the nose of the John Tojeiro designed AC Ace. Amazingly, the new unit was only around 15lb heavier than the 2-litre Bristol engine it was replacing and, by mounting it low and well back in the chassis, AC immediately overcame any handling problems that could so easily have resulted from this inspired marriage. The resulting car was a winner from its hungry open mouth to the tip of its growling tail pipes. In later 289ci and 427ci forms, it won countless races and championships on both sides of the Atlantic, while the Shelby American Cobra Daytona Coupes of 1965 beat Ferrari to the ultimate prize of the day - the FIA World Manufacturers' title. Under the circumstances it is perhaps hard to believe that the final road-going versions - the coil-sprung MKIII cars of 1968 - were slow to find homes. Fast forward fifteen years or so, however, and original Cobras were suddenly escalating in value, quickly shooting way beyond the reach of most enthusiasts for ever. Almost overnight the market for replicas was born and among the current options is the Fiero Factory Euro 427. This comes as a chassis/body kit to which the major components from a Ford Sierra or Granada Scorpio are fitted to complete the car.

The right-hand drive example offered was built this year and has covered just 250 miles since being registered in September. It employs Sierra running gear and is powered by a 2.9-litre Scorpio V6 engine coupled to a Type 75 five-speed manual gearbox, which in turn drives through a limited slip differential. Braking is by discs all-round and the Fiero rides on split rim Image wheels. Not surprisingly considering the car's tender age, the vendor rates its bodywork, paintwork and trim as 'immaculate', the engine as 'excellent' and the gearbox as 'good'. This extremely striking evocation is finished in Bronze teamed with a broad central Gold stripe and Magnolia interior trim, and comes complete with side pipes, screen deflectors and a substantial looking roll hoop. Quite a looker!
