Lot details
Registration No: PPC258E
Chassis No: 4097355
Mot Expiry: June 2010

Introduced in 1965 the Bristol 409 sported a new trapezoidal grille but was otherwise stylistically indebted to its 408 predecessor (the two models' production lives overlapping somewhat). Under the skin, however, the newcomer witnessed some real improvements in terms of ride quality, performance and general refinement. Based around the marque's familiar 114-inch wheelbase box-section platform chassis equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a `live' Salisbury rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, the 409 employed notably softer spring rates. Though, the saloon's poise and handling remained assured thanks to some skillfully revised geometry and more rearward-biased drivetrain mounts. Sourced from Chrysler, its 5.2 litre OHV V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission were smooth and quiet in operation. Yet with a claimed 250bhp and 340lbft of torque on tap, the four-seater was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.8 seconds and 132mph. Guaranteed exclusivity by its £4,989 price tag, the 409 boasted a luxurious but understated cabin. Only available for four years, just 74 are thought to have been made.

Finished in Rolls-Royce Regal Red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor's agent as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment and interior trim. Despite noting that the paintwork "needs attention in places" he believes the bodywork to be "generally very sound". Reportedly `barn stored' between 1983 and 2001 following its involvement in a minor accident, `PPC 258E' is then understood to have spent ten months being "stripped, rechromed, retrimmed and resprayed" at a bodyshop belonging to the deceased owner's son. Listed on the Bristol Owners Club Register, the 409 is thought but not warranted to have covered some 80,000 miles from new (a figure apparently substantiated, at least in part, by "much history" and "various old MOTs"). Benefiting from optional power steering and a `FM' converted period radio, `PPC 258E' is said to be "a delight to drive". Riding on steel wheels, this sleek Bristol is offered for sale with a history file including "invoices for thousands of pounds", assorted expired tax discs and the aforementioned old MOTs.

PLEASE NOTE: Since going to press with the catalogue, the vendor has informed us that they have found several old photographs of the vehicle, as it was found in a barn and through various stages of restoration, along with the original Drivers Instruction Book.
