This Riley, described by the Vintage Sports Car Club on their Registration and Eligibility Form as being the 'Beacham Special', has a 1930-dated Riley Monaco chassis, the body of which was removed and replaced with the current single-seater racer bodywork in the 1950s. The original engine was replaced with a 1934-manufactured 12/4 1.5-litre engine, which was then supercharged in 1962. When raced by the late George Beacham, the car had a different style nose.
The 4-cylinder engine runs on methanol and breathes through a sand-cast, 2in C type SU carburettor. The Rootes blower, which runs at 10psi, has been rebuilt recently and the compression ratio is 7.5:1. When last measured on a rolling road, power output was approximately 140bhp.
Since being acquired by the Bedfordshire owner some three years ago, the close ratio gearbox with centre-change has been renewed. A 1936 ENV rear axle has been employed with radius rods and open propshaft. The self-starter can be actuated by both on-board or slave batteries. Both bodywork and paintwork are said to be in very good order.
An inspection will confirm that a great deal of thought, time and effort has gone into creating this Special, which has been built in the tradition and spirit of the famous racing Rileys and ERAs. The all-important 'Blue Form' to enable the next owner to compete in all manner of VSCC events from races to hill climbs comes with the car.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
