Lot 76 - 1999 Bentley Continental SC Sedanca

1999 Bentley Continental SC Sedanca

Estimated at £120,000 - £130,000

Lot details
Registration No: V109KPB
Chassis No: SCAB2223C1XCH65006
Mot Expiry: T.B.A.

Launched at the Geneva Salon in 1991, the Heffernan and Greenley designed Continental follows in the spiritual wheel tracks of some of the greatest Bentleys ever made: Barnato's 'Blue Train' Gurney Nutting-bodied coupe, the Embiricos 2-door and the most memorable of them all, the R Type Continental. The Continental R is the first car in years to be totally unique to Bentley and not shared with the then owners, Rolls-Royce.
In many ways, the Continental was out of step with the world when it was first launched. A big motor car in every sense of the word, a Conti offering unrivaled comfort for two, with ample luggage space for a Trans-Continental dash or a weekend spent searching out and enjoying great driving roads. In this capacity, the Continental remains unbeatable and arguably unique.
The car's beauty comes from its muscular bodywork, which looks even more purposeful in the shorter wheelbase, as seen here in the ultra rare Continental SC or Sedanca. Less than 3000 Continentals were built since launch, of which some 1200 consisted of the majestic Azure Convertible. However, the Continental SC has to be the rarest of all Continentals with only 75 examples said to have been produced, each one individually bespoke to the owner's requirements in the best tradition of classic Bentleys.
This 1999-built Continental SC is powered by the classic V8, turbocharged to raise power output to 400bhp, providing fortunate owners with a tidal wave of pulling power. Whatever the speed, there is a bridle waiting to be unleashed in an instant. The big turbo spools up to speed straight off the starting blocks and the Continental reels in the horizon with uncanny ability.
Remarkably, this particular car has only covered 2500 miles from new in 1999, when it was ordered in the distinctive Red Pearl Metallic with Sandstone Beige leather, as presented today, complimented with St James Red hide and full burwood interior. The removable glass and metal panels, leather trimmed above driver and passenger, create traditional Sedanca De Ville motoring - whilst, when fully in place, the glass panels give the now weather-secure cockpit a light and airy feel for touring in grand style.
The Continental SC is a magical car. Much of its charm stems from its ability to mix conservative and establishment tastes with simply outrageous performance. It is a car that you cannot help warming to, as it does things that its size and shape suggest should not be possible and it does them with considerable grace, a true Bentley...amongst Bentleys, in fact.
When new, this magnificent machine cost £275,000. There can be no other example with mileage this low. The next extremely fortunate owner will become a member of one of the most exclusive of all motoring clubs - Continental SC ownership.
