Estimated at £3,500 - £4,500

Lot details
Registration No: OUT381F
Chassis No: 1450268
Mot Expiry: Mar 2007

Arguably one of the best-looking Alfa Romeos ever made and a true 1960s icon, the Giulia Sprint GT was launched in 1963. Penned by Bertone, its two-door coupe bodyshell was based on the Milanese manufacturer's highly regarded 105-series platform. Equipped with all round coil-sprung suspension, sharp brakes and well weighted steering, it handled with typical brio and panache. Evolved in line with its saloon sibling, the compact GT's model range was extended in 1968 to include the revised 1750 GTV. Fitted with an enlarged 1779cc 'twin-cam' engine, five-speed gearbox and uprated disc brakes, the new car also gained two extra headlights, a 30mm wheelbase extension and a host of minor improvements.
Finished in red with black upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "fair" (interior trim), "very fair" (bodywork), "good" (chassis, paintwork, electrical equipment, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (engine, transmission) condition. Built in Italy on 3rd June 1968 but not UK registered until 18th July 1968, it was apparently given an extensive restoration by its fourth private keeper, Reg Barker, between 1990 and 1991. Treated to "many new body parts" before having its colour changed from ochre yellow to Alfa red, the coupe also benefited from various mechanical upgrades including "a Harvey Bailey handling kit, lowered suspension and LSD". Reputed to develop 140bhp thanks to "Autodelta cams and Weber carburettors", its rebuilt engine was reportedly put to the test "on the hills of Prescott and Loton Park in 1992". The subject of an article by Laurence Meredith in 'Practical Classics' during spring 1995, OUT381F "fell into the hands of well known MAC stalwart Bob Dayson" some four years later. Sold by him to the current owner in 2005, it is understood to have had new brake callipers installed all round and to ride on standard wheels. Believed but not warranted to have covered 113,000 miles from new (a figure partially substantiated by old MOT certificates etc), it is offered for sale with "all bills for work done on the car since 1990", "original steering wheel and sump guard", green logbook, fresh MOT certificate and historic class (free) road tax until 31st May 2006.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT until March 2007.
