This sensational car is documented in Doug Nye's respected book 'Cooper Cars' on page 353 and was delivered as a 1963 Type 'M' Monaco, in rolling chassis form to a W. Mitchell in the United States. It was apparently never fully built up and it was discovered as an unused rolling chassis in Canada and purchased by Jack Boxstram. He sold it on to a Barry Brown in California, who restored the car including having a new correct body constructed by Len Pritchard of Williams and Pritchard in England.
It was sparingly used in the eighties and in the early 1990's was sold to Vintage Racing Motors, a highly respected vintage racing company in the USA, who restored it again. This was more along the lines of a refreshment and included the construction of a US legal fuel cell, replacing the original aluminum fuel tank, and a complete overhaul of the 289 engine, its McKee transaxle and the fuel, oil and brake systems as well as the suspension. The engine is fully race prepared with all steel internals and produces over 300 bhp whilst the McKee transaxle is a unique, very strong and serviceable unit which is essentially the mating of the GM Warner T10 gearbox and a Halibrand quick change rear axle. It features a four speed synchromesh gearbox, sadly without a reverse gear, and a special system which allows a lightening fast change of the rear axle ratio without having to even remove the rear body section. The 'refreshment' also included the construction of a new, removable, roll bar with forward brace, which was lower than the original one installed for that very tall owner.
Since that work was completed the car has had no track time and very minimal road use and indeed has merely been tested around their enormous parking lot. Vintage Racing Motors are keen to advise a prospective purchaser that both the engine and transaxle should be gently 'run in' before the car is used in anger.
The car comes complete with full FIA historic papers, the above mentioned fuel tank, the spare roll-bar and various transaxle spares including new 'drop gears' for the transaxle which allows a selection of final drive ratios. Beautifully restored and race prepared the car is immensely handsome, fully operational and needs only the minimum of sorting and light running in to make it truly ready to race and it will be exceptionally quick.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
