Lot details

Registration No: JSV 515
Chassis No: SAJJHALH7AA592352
MOT: April 2022

  • A highly unusual and collectible XJ40 allying the 3.6 litre DOHC engine to Getrag five-speed manual transmission
  • Supplied new by Appleyard Jaguar of Harrogate to J.H. Foster Esq and three subsequent keepers
  • Taken in and out of dry storage over the last 21 years and passed its first MOT in a decade during April 2021

Following numerous delays, the all new XJ6 (or XJ40 to use its code name) was finally launched in October 1986 as a replacement for Jaguar’s ageing Series III cars. More evolutionary than revolutionary, it boasted all-round independent suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and generous levels of sound deadening. It proved to be a credible alternative to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-series and was well received by the contemporary motoring press. The newcomer was initially available with a choice of two variants of the straight-six AJ6 powerplant - the 2.9-litre SOHC unit (a derivative of Jaguar’s legendary V12) or the 3.6-litre DOHC engine. The former produced 165bhp and 176 lb ft of torque and the latter gave 221bhp and 248 lb ft of torque. Allied to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic 'J-gate' transmission, they allowed purchasers to prioritise performance over economy and vice-versa.

Finished in the elegant combination of Arctic Blue Metallic with Barley leather upholstery, chassis 592352 is notable for having been specified with the larger 3.6 litre DOHC straight-six engine and Getrag five-speed manual transmission. The vast majority of XJ40s were equipped with automatic transmission and the manual gearbox, when ordered, was typically mated to the smaller 2.9 litre powerplant. Sportier and more engaging to drive than its appearance might otherwise suggest, the XJ6 was supplied new to J.H. Foster Esq by Appleyard Jaguar of Harrogate on August 1st 1989 and serviced no fewer than twenty times up to 104,800 miles (less than 100 miles ago). Presenting far better internally and externally than one might expect of a Jaguar with a six-figure odometer reading, the four-seater has obviously been much loved. Taken in and out of dehumidified dry storage over the past twenty-one years, ‘JSV 515’ passed its first MOT test in a decade with no advisories on 8th April 2021. Pleasingly retaining its original book pack and ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing appeal’, this highly unusual XJ40 would doubtless be welcome at JEC and JDC events.
