The Vignale penned Indy America (named in celebration of marque victories at the Brickyard in the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940) consisted of a steel closed 2+2 coupe body welded, and not bolted to a slightly shortened Quattroporte chassis frame with the track slightly widened. Completing the Modena manufacturer's range of exceedingly Grand Tourers for the late 1960s, the Indy replaced the Sebring and thus phased out the six cylinder cars which were really the final link with the Maserati Bros.
To begin with, the Indy was fitted with the 4.1 litre V8, but in 1970, the 4.7 engine (as fitted to the 1971 car on offer here) replaced it, giving owners a 0-62mph time of 7.5sec and a top speed potential of 155mph. 1973 cars were powered by an even more potent 4.9 V8. The Indy often outsold the Ghibli and, by the time production ceased in 1974, 1136 had been made.
This Indy 4.7 was purchased from Michael Smith at Corley Motors, who rebuilt the engine renewing all worn parts only 1000 miles ago. The sills have been rebuilt in stainless steel and aluminium by Streber, Devon, after which the car has not been used until 2001. Claimed always to have been well cared for and kept in a heated garage, this would appear to be a sound car, in generally good condition and one that is fresh to market.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
