1939 MG SA Cutaway Door Tourer

Sold for £14,062

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: SY 6969
Chassis No: SA/2281
Mot Expiry: None

We are very pleased to offer today this M.G. SA 'cut away' door tourer with coachwork by Charlesworth, which is believed to have been used by the Scottish Police early on in its life and was first registered on the 5th July 1939. There were in the region of ninety SA tourers made, but with different body styles, and today there are only about ten in total that are still known to exist. Records and a letter from British Leyland Heritage, which is in the history file, show that this is a very rare car these days and one which hardly ever comes onto the market.
It has been in the present owners collection for the past twenty years or so and appears to still retain its original Midlothian registration number of SY6969. The car comes with its original buff logbook, but this has faded and most of the details are unreadable, but we have confirmed the details with the SV section of the M.G. Car Club and they can confirm that the car is known to them.
The owner has informed us that the car has not been used much in the last few years and the paintwork on car would benefit from being refurbished. He tells us that the car drives well and is otherwise in generally good condition.
We are sure that this very rare, exciting and pretty tourer will prove an irresistible opportunity for someone today.
PLEASE NOTE: Since the completion of the catalogue we have established that this body is the third and last of three body styles and the rarest of them all. There are probably only six of this body style left out of a total of nineteen survivors. We believe it to have been rebuilt in the late 1970's or early 1980's and the registration number is a Scottish Police number and therefore probably the original one.
