Lot 66 - 1903 Cadillac Model A Runabout

1903 Cadillac Model A Runabout

Sold for £28,125

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: D 1192
Chassis No: 1102
Mot Expiry: None

Cadillac was founded by Henry M Leland and owes its name to the intrepid French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac who discovered what became Motown Detroit early in the 18th century. Although destined to become the most luxurious of all US brands, and the choice of Presidents no less, the first Cadillacs were very definitely pitched at Henry Ford's Model T pop end of the market.

The first Caddy was displayed at the 1903 New York Automobile Show and, such was the marque's immediate impact on pioneer motorists, a total of 1652 Cadillacs were sold in the first year of production, an amazing number of vehicles in those early automobile making days. During 1904, in only their second year, Cadillac production had risen to 2418 all of which were also quickly snapped up by pioneer automobilists.

According to the entrant, this Cadillac Runabout is a 1903-dated open 4-seater, with rear-entrance access. Painted in traditional for the times maroon with black wings, it has two period brass lamps and black hide covered seats, and a 2-speed manual gearbox and chain-drive to the rear axle. Having been in storage for the past three years however, the claimed to be 1.5-litre 1-cylinder motor has not been run for some time, so the mechanical items will require recommissioning before D 1192 is put back on the road again and exercised on the top events for which this Veteran would be eligible.

PLEASE NOTE: We have not had this vehicle running.
