Here is a Bentley Mulsanne Turbo, handbuilt by the Rolls-Royce factory at Crewe, which, via dealers Mann Egerton, was supplied to the first Suffolk owner, a C R Giles. This Mr Giles was better known, of course, as 'Giles', the celebrated cartoonist whose witty artwork enlivened the pages of the Daily and Sunday Express newspapers for so many years. Giles ordered his Bentley with Georgian Silver paintwork and Burgundy interior, with lower dash trimmed in hide, rear parcel shelf, leather-covered steering wheel and Fiamm Avanti air horns (such a high-spec costing him £62,486!).
Giles owned the car for thirteen years, though he hardly drove it in the final years due to ill health. Subsequently, it has been owned by two more private collectors, the latter, after storing the car for six years, spending over £4700 on a major overhaul by a leading Derbyshire specialist engineer of the turbocharger, cylinder head and air-conditioning. A detailed bill is contained in the history file.
The overall condition of bodywork and interior, as well as the 6750cc 8-cylinder engine and automatic transmission, is described by the vendor as being good. We also understand from him that the 20,474 miles displayed on the odometer when entered is the genuine total mileage from new.
Here, therefore, is a really low mileage Mulsanne Turbo with the benefit of some nice celebrity provenance - 1980s Bentleys do not come much better than this one.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
