Tigas were made at Windsor, Caversham and High Wycombe, 1976-1988, when remaining founder and former BRM GP driver Howden Ganley sold the business. During the time that the New Zealander and his Aussie co-creator of the marque Tim Schenken, who also graduated from Formula Ford, via F3 and F2 to F1 drives for Brabham, Surtees and Williams, some 400 Tigas were produced.
Most popular was the Sports 2000, a Formula Ford 2000 with enclosed two-seater bodywork, 250 being manufactured. They also produced around 60 of the basic FF open-wheeled single seaters and 10 of the larger capacity FFs for the senior category of the main training category for F1 aspirants.
The Tiga being auctioned, chassis number 20 and therefore one of 21 cars made from their first year at Windsor, started life as a Formula Ford 2000. The tubular space frame has been restored, while GRP bodywork, front-mounted rad, outboard suspension and Hewland box are F2000 period correct. At some time, for hillclimbs and sprints, a Cortina GT type engine on twin Weber DCOEs has been fitted as have wider steel wheels at the front and Compomotive alloys at the rear shod with race Goodyears.
The vendor tells us that this only lightly used single seater, which would be entirely practical to campaign very much as is in speed events or could be easily converted to comply with historic racer regs, is ‘on the button’ for more affordable fun.
