1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth

Estimated at £10,000 - £12,000

Lot details
Registration No: N325SEW
Chassis No: WFOBXXGKABSU92411
Mot Expiry: April 2012

Intended as both a homologation special and halo model, work on the embryonic Escort RS Cosworth began during the late 1980s under the guidance of Ford SVO stalwarts Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler. Although made to resemble a MkV Escort by Stephen Harper of MGA Developments, the newcomer utilised a modified version of its Sierra Cosworth predecessor's chassis and running gear (complete with longitudinal drivetrain layout). Equipped with all-round independent suspension and ventilated ABS disc brakes, the downforce generating hatchback was powered by a 2-litre DOHC YBT turbocharged four-cylinder engine allied to five-speed manual MT75 transmission. Tasked with deploying some 227bhp and 220lbft, its permanent four-wheel drive system featured a 34:66 front / rear torque split, limited slip rear differential and viscous couplings. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds and 140mph, the Escort RS Cosworth was assembled by coachbuilders Karmann in both LHD and RHD guises. Production ran for just under four years (19th February 1992 - 12th January 1996) and resulted in a mere 7,145 cars of which the first 2,500 were fitted with the more lag prone but homologation friendly Garrett T3 turbocharger. Victorious in eight Group A and two WRC rallies, the Ford was also a phenomenally capable road car and counts Jeremy Clarkson among its legion of fans.

Finished in Metallic Aubergine with Black leather upholstery, this particular example has benefited from a Stage 1 upgrade (an accompanying dyno sheet issued by Clive Atthowe Tuning during 2000 shows enhanced outputs of 255bhp and 299lbft). More recently 'N325 SEW' has had attention paid to its brakes (2006-7), water pump (2007), Lambda sensor (2007), timing belt (2007, circa 12,000 miles ago), tyres (2008), tie rod ends (2008) and battery (2009) etc. While work carried out this year has included an oil change, turbocharger overhaul (complete with W/360 thrust bearing), fresh brake pads and the fitting of four new Graham Goode Racing coil springs. Riding on 18-inch OZ alloy wheels, the Ford is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. MOT'd into April 2012, it is offered for sale with a history file and two sets of keys.
