Being auctioned here is a Bristol 401, an `Aerodyne' coupe, which was handbuilt at the famous West Country manufacturer's Filton works in 1950. Subsequently, the righthand drive 2-door fixed head spent some years in the US.. When entered for the sale, the total mileage is believed by the current owner to have risen to195,982.
During the last four years work has included a rebuild of the 2-litre six with unleaded cylinder head conversion. Oil pressure is said currently to read 40psi when hot and idling with 60+ showing at 3000rpm, whilst the motor is said to be excellent and never overheats. The entire fuel system was also overhauled with petrol tank and fuel lines cleaned out and Facet 13 gallons per hour electric fuel pump fitted. The electrics, reportedly all very good, were converted to 12 volts, an alternator replacing the original dynamo. The 4-speed manual gearbox is said to be very good.
Even more recently, extensive renovation was carried out by marque specialist Andrew Mitchell to body and chassis in 2003, both reportedly being free of rot with dark blue paintwork very good, while the brakes were overhauled earlier this year. Although still rated as good, the beige hide trimmed interior some does require some refurbishment to complete. Although, as the vendor tells us he has done, some may prefer to retain the look and feel of a fifty-four year old motor car, which has been completely reliable and a joy to drive.
