Jowett was founded by brothers Benjamin and William, who set up the Jowett Motor Manufacturing Company with £90 capital in 1901, making bicycles and v-twin engines which were employed as replacements for Aster and De Dion Bouton power units. The brothers produced their first of many flat-twin engines, for which the marque became famous, and which powered all Jowett cars until 1936 and was still being installed under the bonnets of the firm's Bradford vans up to the end of Jowett production in 1953. Sadly though, after years of lying idle, the Bradford works was demolished in 1983 with a supermarket being opened on the site in 1987.
The Cheshire owner of the 1952 Jowett Bradford van being auctioned here tells us that the Bradford-built vehicle was fully restored some six years ago, whilst the 1005cc flat-twin cylinder engine was overhauled two years ago and is claimed to be still in good order. Today, the overall condition of chassis and body, green paintwork and trim, as well as 4-speed manual gearbox and electrical equipment, is said to be good.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
