Introduced in 1999, the A6 Allroad was Audi's entry into the lucrative `soft roader' market. Although, stylistically indebted to its A6 Avant sibling, the newcomer combined quattro permanent four-wheel drive with a sophisticated height adjustable air suspension system. The only car-based SUV to clear one of Land Rover's testing off-road courses to date, the A6 Allroad is also a surprisingly refined motorway companion. Visually distinguished by its unpainted bumpers and wheelarch extensions, it remains a typical Audi inside with a supremely ergonomic cabin layout and climate control as standard. Only available with Ingolstadt's more potent petrol and diesel engines, the first generation A6 Allroad remained in production until 2005.
This particular example was purchased to take part in the 2001 Inca Trail Rally which is a real marathon taking up some 16,000 miles and starting and finishing in Rio de Janeiro. The crews pass through the Peruvian capital Lima and Ushuaia, claimed to be the world's southernmost city, on the way. And although this Audi was the smallest 4x4 entered it successfully finished winning a Gold Medal. Since then it has not been idle having completed 12 classic rallies as a press car: the London-Lisbon, Arctic, Le Jog (x3), Irish Trial, Scottish Malts (x2) and Winter Trial (x4). `Y884 MBT' has been featured in the Daily Telegraph, 4x4, Audi and Audi Driver magazines, and has been shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where it was co-driven by Race Retro Director, John Williamson and official photographer, Mike Johnson.
The 2.5-litre six-cylinder diesel engine has been remapped for increased power and torque (up from 180 to 220bhp) while other modifications / additions include a fire extinguisher, fog lights, a Brantz trip meter and a passenger horn button. Described by the vendor as being in "good overall" condition, this special car is offered with current MOT certificate valid until February 2009.
