The most famous product from the State-owned VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerk of Zwickau in the now dismantled former German Democratic Republic was the Trabant, better known the world over by car collectors as the `Trabby`, which succeeded the Zwickau P70, a super-peasant machine powered by a 500cc 18bhp two-stroke twin.
This 1984-made two-door Trabant estate with full tailgate in very East German grey was acquired from Germany in 1991 by a previous UK owner, the late Mr Fox, who totally restored the once Communist automotive icon and then ran it for three years. Some period items have survived his renovation, however, with the factory stickers still displayed in the windows and the original logbook as well as the bill of sale and the shipping papers included with the car.
Current condition of the left-hand drive chassis is said to be good, extremely unusual composite bodywork excellent, paintwork very good and interior in blue cloth also good. All wheels and tyres are claimed to have been renewed, the 600cc two-stroke two-cylinder motor reportedly rebuilt, four-speed manual transmission OK and electrical equipment good.
