Introduced in July 1957, the 'Nuova 500' utilised a different mechanical layout to its 'Topolino' predecessor. Still driving the back wheels but now rear-mounted, the newcomer's two-cylinder, air-cooled, OHV engine was a first for Fiat. Mated to four-speed manual transmission, the 479cc unit developed a mere 13bhp. With a dry weight of just 470kg, this modest output still translated into a reputed top speed of over 53mph. Equipped with all-round independent suspension (transverse-leaf front / coil-sprung rear), hydraulic drum brakes and a retractable fabric roof, the 500 was initially too basic to win over the buying public. Quick to act, Fiat launched two new versions at that year's Turin Motor Show. While, the 500 'Economia' showed little sign of change beyond a price cut, the 500 'Normale' gained wind-up windows, two extra horsepower, opening front quarter lights, improved switchgear and a properly upholstered rear seat.
Finished in metallic copper with light grey upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is variously described by the vendor as being in "fair" (electrical equipment, interior trim), "fair / good" (paintwork), "OK" (wheels / tyres) or "good" (engine, gearbox, chassis, bodywork) condition. Reportedly "supplied new to South Africa", 'YAS 422' is further understood to have been restored there before coming to the UK in 2002. Thought but not warranted by the seller to be one of the earliest right-hand drive 'Normale' cars still in existence, it was apparently treated to a "£450 brake overhaul" last year. Sporting steel wheels, suicide doors and a fabric roof, this delightful Fiat is offered for sale with history file and restoration photographs.
