The first real SL Mercedes was the 300SL coupe, the celebrated 1954 Gullwing, which lead to the 300SL roadster being introduced in 1957 in far greater numbers - the SL having been in continuous production, albeit in various guises, since then. The 230SL was first unveiled at the 1963 Geneva Salon as a more luxurious and much more comfortable successor to the 300 and 190SL. The removable 'Pagoda' shaped hardtop was considered very avant garde indeed.
The new 2496cc motor, an overhead cam in-line six, produced 170bhp at 5600rpm, which made the new SL good for 120mph down the autobahn. Ingeniously, the engineers adopted low-pivot, swing-axle rear suspension with coil springs which made for a more supple ride and yet without any loss of high speed cornering potential. Whilst specially prepared examples were successful on such car breakers as the Liege-Sofia-Liege, the standard model has moved effortlessly from being an everyday motor car, albeit a highly dependable long distance one, to taking on classic status which, deservedly, it enjoys to this day.
The entrant of this 230SL, which was manufactured in Stuttgart in 1965, tells us that a small fortune has been spent on restoring this roadster to its current condition. The bills covering the work carried out are on file and may be inspected at the documents desk. The specification includes both hard and soft-tops, power steering, servo-assisted brakes and automatic transmission.
