Just as soon as the nimble little Mini roared onto the scene in 1959, it was obvious that this was a brilliant concept from the drawing board of Alec Issigonis. For by placing an independently sprung wheel at each corner and employing a transversely mounted engine in unit with the gearbox, the front-wheel drive package delivered superlative handling and achieved an impressive power to weight ratio. It was an instant success in the showroom and, thanks to a tie-up with race car constructor John Cooper which led to increasing power outputs from larger and larger engines, the mighty Mini did well on the track too.
The Lancashire vendor of the 1966-manufactured Austin Mini Cooper 1275 S being auctioned here tells us that his sports saloon was discovered in storage in 1989 and, having been lightly restored by a local rally enthusiast, was evented on the 1996 Mini Monte as well as a Norwich Union Classic.
More recently, the engine has been fully rebuilt and, with both engine and transmission claimed to be in excellent order, we understand that the car currently drives just like an S should. Bodywork, white and black paintwork and red and grey interior are said to be very good, whilst the 34,000 miles displayed when entered is believed to be the genuine total.
It comes with a freshly renewed MOT certificate and BMI Heritage certificate confirming the production details as well as invoices detailing work carried out over the years.
