The Packard Company had pioneered the V12 configuration with their twin six of 1915 but when they brought out the new V12 in 1932, as a counter to the multi-cylinder models from Cadillac, they became simply known as the '12'. Launched in August 1933, the Eleventh Series Packard's had many of the styling cues featured on the sensational Golden Packard which was the star exhibit at the 'Century of Progress' exhibition in Chicago of that year. The Eleventh Series '12' was available in a choice of three wheelbase lengths, 135, 142 and 147 inches, and this stunning five passenger coupe is on the intermediate chassis and fitted with a specially ordered factory bodywork. Indeed this is a very rare car anyway as it had an amazingly low production run of only 960 models of all denominations were produced.
The model 737 coupe cost a massive $4,570 and you could have bought eight Ford V8 coupes for the same money. Despite weighing more than 5,500lbs, the 7.3 litre Eleven Series V12 was celebrated for its lively performance and on test reached a 0-60 speed of 20.4 seconds. The three-speed selective syncromesh transmission incorporated a vacuum assisted single plate drive clutch and the vacuum servo assisted brakes were a standard fitment.
It is believed that only two or three of these five passenger coupes were ever built by the factory and this particular car retains its original radio, a $79.50 option, and its heater which is also first seen on the 1934 Packard V12. It is in remarkable condition throughout and has covered less than 22,000 miles since it was delivered on the 9th July 1934 by Packard's dealership in New York in its very distinctive black over midnight blue with grey pin striping and upholstered in a fawn West of England cloth.
Its distinctive dashboard is fitted with all the original instrumentation and the running boards retain the factory rubber covering and it has the optional deluxe emblem and radiator ornament, the so-called 'Flying Lady'. It has only had two owners since 1990 and this wonderful car featured in a Poirot film and is registered in this country with the current V5 registration document.
This is a wonderful example of American car production at its very best.
