Ransom Eli Olds founded Reo in Lansing, Michigan, after he had left the Olds Motor Works, for whom he had designed the world's first mass-produced automobile, the Curved Dash Oldsmobile. With financial input from Olds Motor Works backer Reuben Shettler, Olds set up the R E Olds Co in 1904, but following an objection from the original company's owners, Olds had to change the name of the new venture to the Reo Motor Car Company, employing his initials for the badge.
This is an outstanding example of a large and tall 4-door sedan with ample space in the back produced by Reo during the 1920s. The 1923-dated lefthand drive REO T6 has an opening front screen and enormous wooden steering wheel with all period fittings still present, occupants getting a heater too. Sedan coachwork top and wings have been repainted in blue and centre-section refinished in cream with black Everflex covered roof, a striking combination, while pale blue interior has been renewed at some time and the car rewired.
Acquired at one of our auctions in 1998, current condition of chassis, body, paintwork and interior is said to be very good, 239cu ins capacity six and all electrical equipment reportedly in good order and 3-forward speed manual transmission very good. A pleasure to rally as well as providing memorable transport for occasional weddings, says the owner, this is high quality American engineering at its best.
