Combining sportscar performance with saloon practicality, the 3.4 litre version of Jaguar's ground breaking MKI was introduced in 1957. Sharing the same monocoque bodyshell as its established 2.4 litre sibling, the newcomer was similarly equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a Panhard rod-located leaf-sprung back axle. However, with some 210bhp and 215lbft of torque on tap, the larger engined model was easily capable of overwhelming its hydraulic drum brakes prompting Jaguar to hurriedly introduce a four-wheel disc option (later standardised). Structurally over-engineered (especially above the waistline), the MKI 3.4 litre lent itself to competition usage with even the standard road going variant being reputedly capable of 120mph.
Finished in British Racing Green with green leather upholstery, this particular example boasts an interesting history. First registered as 'FWB 1' to Browns Garage of Loughton (Essex) on November 7th 1957, chassis S971263DN is known to have participated in the January 1958 Monte Carlo Rally. Crewed during the event by F.W. Brown, Graham Arnold and Edwin J Snusher, the Jaguar seems to have faltered at the end of the Le Puy stage. Apparently unperturbed by this retirement, a plaque from period tuning specialist Swallow Engineering indicates that the MKI was prepared for both the 1960 Monte Carlo and 1960 Tulip rallies. Reregistered as '4938 VW' following its acquisition by Edwin J Snusher on August 31st 1962, the saloon has formed part of a Japanese collection since 1988. Reportedly "running and driving" but in need of recommissioning, this historic Jaguar is offered for sale with 1958 Monte Carlo Rally documentation, buff logbook and customs clearance paperwork.
